In a Digital Age: Can AI Help Us Reflect More, Not Less?

Exploring AI, Presence, and Purpose with Dr. Murat Baday

We were honored to host Dr. Murat Baday, researcher at Stanford University, for a thought-provoking conversation on the intersection of artificial intelligence, human attention, and spiritual well-being.

The event brought together a rich mosaic of attendees, including friends from our workplace community, dedicated BayCC volunteers, the Afghan community from Fremont, and respected figures such as Imam Muhammad S. Sidk, Al Azhari, and Aisha Othman, Esquire. We were also joined by participants online via Zoom, creating a space that bridged both physical and digital presence.

Reflections on AI and Human Depth

Dr. Baday’s message was clear and timely: while artificial intelligence promises convenience and progress, it often distracts us from who we truly are. Rather than bringing us closer to presence, he warned, it may lead us further from it.

He posed a powerful question: Are we using technology to enrich our lives, or is it using us? Citing recent research—including ongoing studies at Stanford—he illustrated how AI increasingly dictates our mental rhythms, leaving us disconnected from meaningful experiences.

Despite the abundance of time-saving tools, Dr. Baday noted that we are spending less time than ever on activities that nourish us—intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally. Instead of using this “freed-up” time for reflection and growth, we often find ourselves consumed by noise.

Moments of Connection

Beyond the insights shared, attendees deeply appreciated the opportunity to connect. After the prayer break, many lingered to socialize, exchange reflections, and enjoy the warmth of community—a reminder that, at our core, we seek presence not only with ourselves but also with one another.

We thank everyone who participated and helped make the event a success.
