Living Beyond Ourselves:
A Mission of Love and Compassion
Our story began when we heard children at the homeless shelter pleading, “Please come back.” It was then we realized that living only for ourselves wasn’t our true purpose. With so many people suffering around us, we knew we had to live for others just as much as for ourselves. While we sleep comfortably in our beds, countless people spend nights on the streets without that privilege. Many young people lack access to even basic necessities like a shower or brushing their teeth.
My friends and I couldn’t forget that cry and many others like it, so we committed ourselves to this cause. Fortunately, many BayCC volunteers shared our feelings and were eager to help. Serving to humanity is in the DNA of BayCC volunteers who are doing this for many years. Even better, we found people with the same passion, motivation, and drive in shelters and other partner organizations.
As we spent more time with foster kids and homeless individuals, we realized how many thing we share with them. They were so friendly and sincere. They never imagined they would end up in such circumstances. Life sometimes brings unexpected challenges. They once dreamed of a happy life for themselves and their families.
Through deeper connections, we learned that their greatest need is compassion. Offering them food, clothing, and essentials are very important but not enough. They need a continuous, meaningful relationship with people who listen, understand, and, most importantly, offer love and compassion. Eventually we now sense that how correct our decision is.
After each connection with them, we feel we need to do more.
