Interfaith Iftar at SPUMC

Shared Space, Shared Purpose

On March 21, BAYCC co-hosted the Interfaith Iftar Dinner at St. Paul United Methodist Church (SPUMC) in Fremont, returning for its second year with familiar energy and a few new faces. The evening brought together neighbors, friends, and faith leaders from across the Tri-City area—each one adding something unique to the conversation.

This night reminded us what’s possible when people come together with sincerity, openness, and the willingness to listen.

The program began outdoors at the Peace Pole, a small but powerful landmark that sits between the church and its neighboring mosque. The two communities share more than a space—they share years of cooperation and respect. It was the right place to start an evening centered on coexistence.

Inside the sanctuary, speakers from each co-hosting organization—including BAYCC, Pacifica Institute, SPUMC, Tri-City Interfaith Council, and Tri-City Muslims—offered reflections on this year’s theme: Thriving in Community. Alameda County Supervisor Elisa Márquez joined them, adding her support for continued interfaith engagement in the region.

As the call to prayer echoed through the space, guests broke their fasts side by side and gathered in the dining hall for iftar. The room was full—of people, of stories, and of shared purpose. Plates were filled with home-cooked food, and conversation moved easily from one table to the next.

During dinner, State Senator Aisha Wahab and California Assembly Member Alex Lee each shared thoughtful remarks. Both touched on the importance of events like these—not just for symbolic unity, but for building the kind of trust and connection that lasts.
